Worksheets, activities, and games for teaching math to students are all readily available with just a few keystrokes. It’s tempting to want to use all of the free tools and resources available to create a program for teaching our students math requirements, but with concerns that we’re wasting more time cobbling together bits of a disconnected curriculum, the opportunity cost may be higher.
Each teacher must spend time looking for tools, ensuring that they are appropriate for the standard, testing them in the classroom, and then adapting. This loop is vicious because it diverts students’ attention away from the TEKS standards that are required to pass the STAAR.

Thousands of Texas K-12 math teachers and administrators met at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas, this past June 29-July 1 for the annual Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching (CAMT). If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, let me explain. The STAAR test, which is a test of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, or TEKS, or Texas Mathematics Standards, is the Texas version of statewide standardized testing.
